Dr. Som Gupta is an internationally educated dentist practicing in Pittsburgh, PA. He received his initial dental training from Punjab Govt. Dental College in Amritsar, India in 1974. After doing a six-month rotating internship, Dr. Gupta did his one-year residency at Irwin Hospital in the department of Dentistry and Oral & Maxillofacial surgery in Delhi.
Dr. Gupta moved to Pittsburgh in 1976 and received his diploma in clinical dentistry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia, PA in 1978. He worked as a staff dentist and quickly became dental director at Primary Care Health Services.
Dr. Gupta started his private practice in Verona, PA in 1981 and shortly after met Dr. Skip Truitt
(skip@cfoo.com) who introduced Dr. Gupta to maxillofacial orthopedics and orthodontics in the early
80s and has never looked back. Functional orthodontics became an integral part of his comprehensive dentistry practice. Dr. Gupta has taken more than 2500 hours of advanced education with the following renowned clinicians: Drs. Brendan Stack, Harold Gelb, John Witzig, William Clark, Derek Mahoney, Dave Singh, Brock Rondeau, and Pankaj Singh.
Dr. Raj Kapoor M.D., a critical care, pulmonary and sleep specialist who is a close friend, encouraged him to help bridge the gap between dentistry and medicine.
Dr. Gupta's oldest son, Dr. Sumit Gupta DDS joined him in 2009 after graduating from the University of Pacific Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco in 2008. Dr. Sumit has also been trained under Dr. Truitt.
Dr. Som Gupta affiliated with Heartland Dental in 2013 and took a break from clinical dentistry in 2018.
His younger son, Dr. Samir Gupta DMD graduated from the University of Temple Kornberg School of
Dentistry in Philadelphia, PA in 2018. He encouraged Dr. Samir to learn Dr. Truitt's orthopedic & orthodontic philosophy. Dr. Gupta accompanied Dr. Samir to a course and observed how Dr. Truitt was continuing to keep up with the advancements in the field despite being in his 8th decade.
At the same time, he met Lourens Alexander duPreez, a master technician, who developed Dental Compass™ instrument and cutting-edge software to analyze imbalances in the TM joint and craniofacial anatomy.
Being a life-long student, Dr. Truitt reignited Dr. Gupta's passion in this field. Since diagnosis is the key to successful treatment, by applying the latest technologies, he will be able to create more precise and personalized treatment which will lead to more efficient & effective outcomes for patients.
Dr. Gupta has a passion for providing patients with the highest quality of care that will benefit their
overall health. Dr. Gupta is excited to step back into clinical dentistry, limiting his practice to Airway
